Changelog

What changed, release by release. The newest is first.

  1. Netbird 0.2.8

New tabs next to the current one.

    • New New tabs open next to the one in front instead of at the end (Settings > Tabs). Links opened one after another from a page stay in the order they were opened; pinned tabs stay together in front. Turned on by default; off, new tabs go at the end as before.
  2. etyOS Next

What has been made since the 0.2.6 image and will be in the next one.

    • Fixed Videos: a film taller than the window, or a window lower than the film, went past the window’s edge and was not centred. The picture now always fits the window, centred, with bars where the shapes differ.
  3. etyOS 0.2.6

Secure Boot: the installation stick starts with it on; Drivers.

    • Fixed The installation stick did not start on a computer with Secure Boot on (it is on by default on most): its boot loader was not signed. It now starts the way Debian’s images do, through shim and Debian’s signed GRUB and kernel; Secure Boot can stay on. Tested on firmware with Secure Boot enforced, through to the installed system with a driver built on the machine.
    • Better The installer shows what the blue screen at the first start looks like and what to press there, when a driver built on the computer needs Secure Boot to trust its key, and warns when the account password could not be typed on that screen (it knows only the English keyboard).
    • New Drivers notices drivers that do not start because their Secure Boot key is not trusted yet (the blue screen was missed) and asks again.
    • New Drivers: what every part of the computer runs on and the best there is for it, each with why. The right NVIDIA driver for the card’s generation (from NVIDIA’s repository for Turing and newer, Blackwell included), newer firmware for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and graphics, processor microcode, video decoding on the graphics card, 32-bit drivers for games, printer and device drivers, firmware updates inside devices, and kernel updates; installed together with one password, Secure Boot taken care of.
    • Fixed An application installed while the session runs started from the launcher only after a new login, and its icon could stay missing until then.
  4. etyOS 0.2.5

Window restore, Cleaner, PDF Viewer, security fixes and a rounder look.

    • New Cleaner: every disk in use and how full it is; what can be cleaned away without losing anything you made (the trash, thumbnails, programs’ caches, the package manager’s downloads, packages no longer needed, old logs and crash reports), each with what it frees; and for each disk, what takes up its space, folder by folder down to the largest files.
    • New PDF Viewer: documents in a column of pages to scroll through, text to select, copy and search, links that work, the document’s contents, a column of small pages, zoom with Ctrl and the wheel or a pinch. PDF files open in it.
    • Fixed Files sometimes found no program to open a file with: a script, a JSON file or another kind of text found nothing although a text editor was there. A file’s type now counts as what it is a kind of too, and the program chosen for it comes first; opening a file with a double click finds programs the same way.
    • Fixed In the dock’s sound panel an application’s name sat on its slider, and the rows were not lined up. Every row is now a card like the volume’s, with icons and names on the same lines.
    • Better Security: the screen now locks before the computer sleeps, whatever sent it to sleep (the lid, the power button, a timeout), and when the system is asked to lock the session; a computer left alone locks after 10 minutes unless Settings says otherwise.
    • Better Security: the login screen is stricter about what can be done before anyone has logged in, and the login password, handed to the keyring at login, is no longer kept longer than a moment.
    • Better Security: Netbird fills a saved password in by itself only on the address it was saved for, and only once you have clicked or typed on the page; its own window now runs in the browser engine's sandbox like the pages do.
    • Better Security: the clipboard history leaves out passwords copied from password managers in X11 programs too, and can be kept in memory only (Settings > Clipboard). Passwords of archives Files opens are no longer visible to other programs.
    • New Windows left open come back after a restart or a new login, in the same places and sizes, maximized or full screen as they were. Files comes back with the folders of its tabs. It can be turned off in Settings > Windows.
    • Better In Files, a click anywhere on the path bar shows the whole path to edit or copy, not only a click on the current folder's name.
    • Fixed Weather sometimes said the weather service did not answer. A city chosen in Russian was looked up in English (and not found) once the interface was English; and the service that finds places often did not answer this way at all. A place is now looked up in the interface's language and then in its own, a request that fails is asked again, and once found, a city's position is kept, so a refresh asks only for the forecast.
    • Better A rounder, calmer look for everything: groups are soft cards with no lines between their rows, buttons and fields are quiet capsules, sliders are a thick bar that fills, switches are larger, and the dock is a capsule. No edges drawn around controls and no shadows under them.
    • Better Switches move with more life: off, the knob is a small dot; turned on, it stretches toward the other side and settles as a full one.
    • Better Settings opens on Home: who you are, and on one card what is changed most often (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the volume, light or dark, Do Not Disturb), each a control right there.
    • Better Settings is easier to take in. Appearance, Dock & Clock and Launcher are shown a part at a time instead of as one long page; light, dark and automatic are three small windows to pick from, and the accent is a row of the colors themselves. Explanations that only repeated what a setting's name already said are gone.
  5. etyOS 0.2.4

System Monitor shows a process's own memory; the welcome no longer brings an engine of its own.

    • Fixed System Monitor counted, for every process, the programs and libraries it shares with others: a dozen processes of one program each showed the whole of it, and the list added up to several times what the machine was using. A process is now shown with the memory that is its own.
    • Fixed The welcome on a first login started a second engine of its own, before the shared one was up. It now waits for it and opens there.
  6. etyOS 0.2.3

System Monitor's list of processes no longer eats memory.

    • Fixed System Monitor's list of processes took some 280 MB of memory and kept it: all five hundred rows were drawn anew every second. A long table now draws only the rows in view.
  7. etyOS 0.2.2

One engine for the shell and the applications: far less memory, faster to open.

    • Better Far less memory: the shell (the dock, notifications, the desktop, the lock screen) and the applications (Settings, Files, the terminal and the rest) now share one engine instead of running one each. The shell at rest takes under half of what it did, and each application opened costs a fraction of what it used to. An application also opens faster: there is no engine to start. The browser keeps one of its own.
  8. Netbird 0.2.7

Cloudflare's check that you are a person passes.

    • Fixed Sites that ask Cloudflare whether a person is there (Turnstile, the box that says “Verify you are human”) refused Netbird with an error (600010). The browser told a page one name for itself and the page's inner frames and workers another; the check compares them. It is now the same everywhere.
  9. etyOS 0.2.1

Virtual machines get the whole keyboard, X11 windows stay where they are put.

    • Better A program that takes the keyboard for itself (a virtual machine one has gone into, a remote desktop) now gets every key: Super, Alt+Tab and the other hotkeys go to what is inside it, not to the desktop. Super+Escape is the way back out, always.
    • Fixed Windows of X11 programs were not told where they had been moved to. A program that works from its own place on the screen (VMware is one) put the pointer somewhere else, and its window jumped back to where it had been when it next changed its size.
    • Fixed A program that had the pointer locked and let it go now gets the pointer where it asked for it, not where it had been caught.
    • Better In the dock's notification center, notifications carry the icon of the application that sent them, not a bell.
    • Fixed Netbird 0.2.7 comes with the system: Cloudflare's check that you are a person passes (see its own entry).
  10. etyOS 0.2.0

The second image: a keyring, an application store, quick actions in the dock.

    • New Quick actions (do not disturb, night light, lock, screenshot, screen recording, settings) have a panel of their own in the dock, as tiles.
    • New A keyring of the system's own: passwords kept by applications are locked with your login password.
    • New A store for applications, in the system's own look: install packages without a terminal.
    • New Montage: sound can fade in and out, the timeline zooms, progress is shown properly.
    • Better Notifications in the dock are grouped by application and then by conversation.
    • Better Password fields show the keyboard layout and Caps Lock.
    • New A game set to a 4:3 picture that paints black bars at the sides itself (Counter-Strike 2 does) can be stretched across the screen: Super+Shift+F on the full screen game goes through 4:3, 5:4, 16:10 and off, and the choice is kept for that game.
    • Better Netbird 0.2.6 comes with the system (see its own entries).
    • Fixed Windows that draw their own frame kept rounded corners when full screen or as large as the screen: the wallpaper showed in the corners.
    • Fixed Links clicked in sandboxed applications (a Snap, a Flatpak) now open in the browser.
    • Fixed When choosing among one application's windows, the windows fly back in their true order: one of another application lying between them is no longer flown over.
  11. Netbird 0.2.6

Links that belong in a tab open in a tab.

    • Fixed Some links opened in a small window of their own instead of a tab (a post on Reddit, a link clicked with Shift). A window is now made only where a page asks for one with a size and goes on talking to it, as a sign-in does.
  12. Netbird 0.2.5

Picture in picture from a button on the video itself.

    • New A video is taken out into a small window of its own with a button on the video, at its right edge, while the pointer is over it; pressed again, it brings the video back. The button by the address is gone (the menu and Ctrl+Shift+P stay).
    • Better An address at the lower edge also comes when you turn back up the page, and goes when you read on.
    • Better With a colour theme, the address no longer has a ring in the theme's colour.
  13. Netbird 0.2.4

Far fewer requests made behind your back.

    • Fixed Search suggestions were asked for at every letter typed, by a program that did not say it was a browser. Now only once typing has paused, one question at a time, under the browser's own name; answers are kept, and an engine that refuses is left alone for a quarter of an hour.
    • Fixed The pictures of the sites on the new tab were asked for again at every page load when a site had none. A missing picture is now remembered for a week.
  14. Netbird 0.2.3

Full screen works again with extensions installed.

    • Fixed With some extensions installed (Google Translate is one), a video would not go full screen after the first click in a page, and sites could no longer ask for the camera, the microphone or notices: the extension's hidden document replaced the pages' permission rules with ones that refuse everything.
  15. Netbird 0.2.2

The address floats over the page again, and comes only when called.

    • Better The address no longer has a band of the window to itself, and the page is no longer moved to make room for it. It lies over the page, out of sight, and comes when the pointer is at the very edge it lives at.
    • Better In a window, the strip the window is carried by is always there and has room of its own above the page. It used to appear over the top of the page.
  16. Netbird 0.2.1

The address band meets the page softly, and comes and goes in one motion.

    • Better The band the address stands in no longer ends in a line across the window: it has the page's own ground colour, and the last of the page thins out into it.
    • Fixed The band took the colours of whatever was passing the page's edge (a picture, a coloured block) and kept them after it had gone by, so it stood out as a strip of another colour.
    • Fixed With the address at the lower edge, the band vanished and came back at a stroke while the address was still on its way. Now both slide together, and the page does not jump under them.
  17. Netbird 0.2.0

Windows that pages open, a gentler shield, and tabs that close themselves.

    • New A window a page opens for itself (signing in through another service, a payment, a share dialog) is now a real small window that keeps talking to its page. Before, it became a tab and the sign-in never came back.
    • New Tabs not opened for a chosen time (an hour, a day, three days, a week) can close by themselves. Off by default; pinned tabs and tabs playing sound stay, and a closed tab comes back with Ctrl+Shift+T.
    • Better The shield now also carries its lists' own repair lists, so it stops less of what sites need to work.
    • Fixed YouTube said there was no connection while the shield was on: its connectivity check was being stopped.
    • Fixed Pin marks on the new tab's tiles show only under the pointer, not on every tile at once.
    • Fixed A label in the site card lost the bottom of its letters.
  18. Netbird 0.1.0

The first release outside etyOS: packages for Linux, Windows and macOS.

    • New Packages of its own: AppImage, .deb and .tar.gz for Linux (x86-64 and ARM64), a .zip for Windows, and applications for Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Only the Linux x86-64 builds have been run on a machine so far.
    • New The address stands in a band of its own, painted in the page's colours, goes as you scroll down and comes back as you scroll up or touch the very edge. Nothing of the page is ever under it.
    • New A card for the site you are on: share it, read it, translate it, zoom it, switch the shield, see what the site may do, clear its data.
    • New A built-in shield against advertising and trackers, with a count by the address and a switch per site.
    • New Saved passwords: filled in across a site's addresses, with a list when there is more than one account, on pages that ask for the name first too. Passwords, bookmarks and history can be brought from other browsers.
    • New Private windows, a reading view, page translation, per-site permissions, pinned and sleeping tabs, search suggestions.
    • New Colour themes for the window, and new-tab backgrounds: still skies, moving ones, pixel art, or your own picture.
    • Better Built on Chromium 152. Google sign-in, which turns away most browsers of this kind, works.
  19. etyOS 0.1.0

    The first image.

    • New The YAWC compositor, the etyDE shell (dock, launcher, notifications, lock screen, login), the installer, and the first applications: Files, Settings, Terminal, Editor, Viewer, Montage, Weather, Calendar, Calculator, Netbird.
    • New The etyOS mark, on the boot screen and in the installer.
