Everything Settings does ends up as plain text in your home directory. Settings is the easy way; the files are the truth, and can be edited, copied to another machine, or kept in version control.
Settings: ~/.config/etyde/
| File | What it holds |
|---|---|
shell | The shell’s preferences, key = value (below) |
appearance | light, dark or auto |
locale | The interface language |
dock | Pinned applications, one desktop-file id per line |
launcher-hidden | Applications hidden from the launcher’s lists |
notifications | Do Not Disturb and quiet hours (schedule, schedule_from, schedule_to) |
files | Files’ own settings: icon size, columns, single click, … |
desktop-layout | Where desktop icons were put, when not kept on a grid |
wallpaper/ | The chosen background picture, copied here |
bluetooth-codecs/ | The codec chosen for each Bluetooth audio device |
The compositor’s own settings are in ~/.config/yawc/config: see
YAWC’s configuration.
State: ~/.local/state/etyde/
What the desktop remembers, as opposed to what you chose:
| File | What it holds |
|---|---|
clipboard, clipboard-images/ | The clipboard history |
notifications | What programs announced, for the notification centre |
calculator | The calculator’s history |
~/.local/state/yawc/session.log is the session log.
~/.local/share/etyde/keyring/ is the keyring.
~/.cache/etyde/ holds what can be fetched again (the forecast).
The shell’s preferences
~/.config/etyde/shell. The dock applies a change within half a second; a
missing key means “as shipped”.

|---|---|
dock.icon_size | Icon size, 32–80 |
dock.align | start, center or end along the bottom edge |
dock.magnify, dock.labels, dock.shade | Hover magnification, names above icons, dimming behind the dock |
clock.show | The clock above the dock |
clock.hours | auto, 12 or 24 |
clock.seconds, clock.size | Seconds; its size |
clock.date | full, short or none |
start.width, start.height, start.columns, start.icon_size | The launcher’s size and grid |
start.frequent | How many most-used applications lead the launcher (0 for none) |
start.shortcuts | Buttons under the applications: settings, files, terminal, monitor |
screenshot.copy, screenshot.save | Where a screenshot goes |
clipboard.enabled, clipboard.size | The clipboard history |
appearance.schedule | Light and dark by the clock |
lock.widgets, desktop.widgets | Which cards the lock screen and the desktop show |
dock.icon_size = 48
dock.align = center
clock.hours = 24
start.frequent = 6
Environment
| Variable | Effect |
|---|---|
ETYDE_SKIP_AUTOSTART=1 | The session does not run XDG autostart entries |
NIRVANA_DISABLE_GPU=1 | Software rendering for an applet, when the GPU process is unstable |
YAWC_STARTUP_COMMAND | What YAWC runs instead of etyde-session |
Sound
At login, etyde-audio-setup creates
~/.config/wireplumber/wireplumber.conf.d/90-etyde-bluetooth-volume.conf
if it is missing: the rule that gives Bluetooth devices software volume. An
existing file is left alone. Remove it to go back to hardware volume (it is
made again at the next login); keep an empty file to opt out for good.
